He served as Chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, and won the 2012 Senior Faculty Trustee Teaching Excellence Award. He also directed the Chinese School of Middlebury College (2002-2017). His research interests include foreign language pedagogy and assessment, teacher development and the integration of technology in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. He is a life-time member of the Chinese Language Teachers Association (CLTA), served on the Executive Board for 2 terms, and was President of the CLTA (2003-04). He is a board member of the International Society of Chinese Language Teaching, Chief Reader of AP Chinese and Senior Academic Advisor for American Councils for International Education.

Eric Grunwald

Eric Grunwald is the director of and a lecturer in MIT’s English Language Studies (ELS) program. He has been teaching in ELS since 2012, drawing on a wide breadth of scholastic and vocational experiences to help students improve their academic and professional communication skills. Prior to this role, he taught English in Berlin, Germany and worked in technology transfer at Stanford. He has served as managing editor of the journal Agni and has received Institute grants to design a website—writingprocess.mit.edu—to instruct students in a formal writing process. Currently, teaches a variety of communication courses for bilingual MIT undergraduates and graduate students and regularly presents at international conferences. Eric Grunwald serves on the CMS/W Writing Council and TESOL’s Higher Education Interest Section.

Fernando Rubio is Director of the Yale Center for Language Study and Professor, Adjunct, of Linguistics at Yale University. His research interests are in the areas of Second Language Acquisition and Teaching Methodologies. He is the author of two textbooks, Tercer Milenio, Kendall-Hunt (2009), and Juntos, Cengage (2018), co-editor of the volume Hybrid Language Teaching and Learning: Exploring Theoretical, Pedagogical and Curricular Issues, Heinle (2012), and co-author of Creating Effective Blended Language Learning Courses: A Research-Based Guide from Planning to Evaluation, Cambridge UP (2020), the winner of the Modern Language Association Kenneth W. Mildenberger Prize in 2021. He has also authored numerous articles and book chapters on issues related to second language acquisition, assessment, and technology-enhanced language teaching.

Mary Jo Lubrano (Ed.D.) is the associate director at the Yale University Center for Language Study (USA) where she delivers professional development for language faculty and graduate students. With a background in Language Testing, Foreign Languages and Literatures, and Multilingual Education, her research interests and publications focus on the validation of high stakes proficiency testing, including distinguished proficiency levels and on assessment literacy. She has been a testing trainer for the Bureau of International Language Coordination (BILC), NATO’s advisory body on language testing and education since 2003. Prior to Yale, she taught at the University of Perugia (Italy). She is a trainer for the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and a certified Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) tester in English and Italian.

Dr. Nan Jiang is a Professor and Director of the Graduate Program in Second Language Acquisition at the University of Maryland. His research focuses on how second languages are represented and processed in the mind, with particular interests in lexical development, morphosyntactic processing, semantic acquisition, and bilingual language processing. He has published numerous articles in SLA, Applied Linguistics, and Psycholinguistics journals. He is also the author of Conducting Reaction Time Research in Second Language Studies (Routledge, 2012), Second Language Processing: An Introduction (Routledge, 2018), and The Study of Bilingual Language Processing (Oxford University Press, 2023).

Peisong Xu is a senior lector II at Yale University. She has served as the Chinese Program coordinator and the course coordinator for heritage and non-heritage intermediate and advanced courses. She has been Chinese AP reader for years, ACTFL mentor and a member of NACEA advisory board. Peisong’s research focus is on curriculum design, communicative language pedagogy, material development for heritage courses, and technology in language teaching. She has received multiple Yale language teaching research and innovation awards and developed an online usage dictionary, published advanced heritage textbooks and articles in international journals of language education. She has organized conferences, teachers’ training workshops on language instruction and conducted presentations at various international conferences.

She currently serves as the Director of the Undergraduate Chinese Program, director and Graduate Advisor of the Chinese Language and Culture Master Program. She is also a board member of the New England Chinese Language Teachers Association. Since joining Brandeis University in 2008, she has taught Chinese language courses at the elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels, and has also offered courses for the Chinese Language and Culture Master Program such as Practical Modern Chinese Teaching Methods and Chinese Teaching in the United States. She has received multiple research grants within the university, such as the Theodore and Jane Norman Award (2021-2023) and the Brandeis University Teaching Innovation Grant (2019-2020)

A multiple-time recipient of the Yale Center for Language Study Teaching Innovation Fund.
Courses taught include elementary, intermediate, and advanced Chinese, as well as courses on history, culture, and the arts.
